The Rhode Island Afflilate American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), along with more than a dozen other local organizations, is leading a campaign to bring attention to the problem of racial profiling in R.I. The campaign begun in May 2009, in which they declared the month of May as “Racial Profiling Awareness Month”. They started their efforts advertising their toll free hotline numbers in which they would take the calls of those who had fallen victim to such a crime. Then later expanding their efforts into an anonymous on-line survey. Not only were the participating organizations fighting against the injustice but they were also lobbying for passage of a comprehensive bill that would place restrictions on police practices that organizations believed encouraged racial profiling.
